O que é custo de vida e por que ele é importante para a sua Independência Financeira

Uma definição formal de custo de vida diz que “é a soma dos preços pagos pelos diversos bens e serviços que são consumidos pelas pessoas, com o qual é possível avaliar o poder de compra dos salários e o valor real da moeda”. Em termos mais diretos e simples eu colocaria que é o quanto de dinheiro você precisa para viver sua vida num dado período.

Eu monitoro meu custo de vida mensal (planejado previamente no meu orçamento e o realizado na prática) e, com a soma dos 12 meses, tenho controle também do meu custo de vida anual. Divido o quanto gasto todos os meses em algumas categorias, pois assim fica mais fácil agrupar as despesas e entender melhor pra onde vai o dinheiro:

Naturalmente estas são as mesmas categorias que eu uso no controle do meu orçamento pessoal e do meu fluxo de caixa, mas isso é assunto para um outro post. Aguardem.

Entendido o conceito de custo de vida, resta responder a outra pergunta: por que ele é importante para a sua Independência Financeira?

Como eu expliquei no post Mas, afinal… O que é mesmo independência financeira?, uma das formas que normalmente utilizamos para calcular quando uma pessoa vai atingir a sua IF (pelo menos para ter uma referência) é quando a renda passiva dos seus investimentos gerarem pelo menos 3 vezes o seu custo de vida. Desta forma, se você não faz ideia de qual é o seu custo de vida atual, como possivelmente vai saber quanto dá 3 vezes dele? Impossível.

Pra deixar as coisas um pouquinho mais complexas (pra mim, mais interessantes), não basta apenas saber o seu custo de vida atual. Sendo a Independência Financeira uma meta de longo prazo, pelo menos para a grande maioria, o desafio está mesmo em saber qual será o seu custo de vida futuro! Mas não é tão complicado como parece. Você só não pode deixar de levar em consideração alguns fatores essenciais, como o efeito da inflação e o estilo de vida que você desejar levar.

Quanto à inflação, já falei um pouco dela aqui, deixando claro que o seu efeito nunca pode ser desprezado, especialmente quando se trata de projeções de longo prazo. O dinheiro simplesmente vai perdendo valor com o passar do tempo, devido ao aumento generalizado dos preços. Portanto, se você acha que 10 mil reais por mês (exemplo) seria mais do que o suficiente para viver bem sua vida, daqui a 5, 10 ou 15 anos você vai precisar de muito, mas muito mais do que isso para viver bem a mesma vida.

O site Little House in the Valley publicou um artigo super interessante comparando o custo de vida de 1973 versus 2013 nos EUA e os resultados foram compilados nesta imagem:

Observe como em 1973 um carro novo custava US$ 3.950 e depois de 40 anos, passou a custar US$ 31.940. Ou o aluguel de um apartamento, que custava US$ 175 por mês e passou a custar US$ 1.018! E isso é apenas um exemplo da realidade nos EUA, pois fazendo a mesma comparação aqui no Brasil, aí que a diferença fica extraordinária mesmo.

O outro fator que citei como essencial para estimar seu custo de vida futuro é o estilo de vida que você deseja ter. Aí já é uma coisa bem pessoal e vai variar bastante de pessoa para pessoa. Tem gente que é consumista e necessita de muitas coisas materiais. Tem o outro lado minimalista que está feliz com pouco e preza mais pelas experiências. Tem gente que quer ter luxo, fama e poder, outros preferem uma vida frugal… Neste ponto, cada um tem que refletir e decidir. Obviamente que quem quer consumir mais, vai precisar também de mais recursos sempre, então prepare sua paciência, maximize suas economias desde já e invista muito bem, pra poder bancar isso tudo.

Pra quem deseja uma vida mais simples (o que muitas vezes é sinônimo de feliz!), as coisas tendem a ser bem mais fáceis. Dá uma olhada no exemplo do Nate e da Liz que mantêm o interessantíssimo blog Frugalwoods, que fala sobre Independência Financeira e um estilo de vida frugal. Para concluir, muitos daqueles que estão planejando sua Independência Financeira pensam normalmente num estilo de vida de nomadismo digital, sem uma base fixa para viver e trabalhar (por prazer e não por dinheiro) e, portanto, outro fator entra em cena, que é o custo de vida em outros países.

Eu tenho o costume de pesquisar, estudar e comparar o custo de vida de outros países ao redor do mundo, algo que faço com o auxílio dos sites que listei no post Recomendações de livros, blogs e sites sobre finanças. Fazendo isso, evito ter surpresas desagradáveis no futuro e os meus planos tomam uma forma cada vez mais clara.

Mais na frente vamos falar de investimentos no exterior, em economias e moedas mais fortes do que o nosso Real, para minimizar os riscos de perda cambial para aqueles que pensam em viver em outros países depois de conquistar sua Independência Financeira.
