Mas, afinal… O que é mesmo independência financeira?

Na minha opinião, para atingir um objetivo é preciso antes de mais nada entender com clareza o que é este objetivo. Meio óbvio, não?

Antes de declarar formalmente meu objetivo de ser independente financeiro, eu passei um bom tempo refletindo sobre o que é exatamente a independência financeira. Confesso até mesmo que comecei a jornada sem entender muito bem o que estava fazendo. Tinha uma ideia, é claro, mas a definição formal ainda não era 100% clara para mim.

Pesquisei na internet, li dezenas de livros, conversei com pessoas que pareciam ter os mesmos interesses e objetivos que eu… Ainda não estava convencido. Então num dia qualquer, me deparei com uma frase que resumia tudo:

“A pessoa financeiramente livre é a que pode comprar uma passagem aérea para qualquer lugar do mundo e permanecer ali, pelo tempo que quiser.”

Na época que li esta frase pela primeira vez, ela fez todo sentido para mim. Depois de alguns anos, continua fazendo. Talvez pelo fato de também ter um interesse natural em viajar e conhecer o mundo, associar o conceito de IF com viagem me ajudou muito a visualizar melhor o conceito.

Se for para colocar em uma palavra, antes de segurança, dinheiro ou economias, a independência financeira é algo muito ligado a liberdade. Desta forma, se na sua escala pessoal de valores (algo que encorajo todos a refletir sobre) a liberdade aparece no topo, ou pelo menos próximo do topo, ter o objetivo de atingir sua independência financeira pode realmente ser uma boa ideia para você.

 

Colocando em termos mais práticos:

Ser independente financeiro significa não ter mais que trabalhar para ganhar dinheiro. Este conceito também é bem fácil de digerir, mas eu ainda prefiro o outro… o da viagem ;-). Até por que meu objetivo não é atingir a IF para simplesmente parar de trabalhar. Trabalhar é bom, dá um sentido e um propósito para a sua vida. O que é realmente fascinante é poder ter escolha. É poder trabalhar com o que te dá mais prazer, nos momentos certos da sua vida, com as pessoas que você gosta e admira, independentemente deste trabalho te gerar uma renda ou não.

Aparentemente, o Professor Hawking está de acordo comigo…

 

Colocando em termos mais práticos ainda:

Para falar de números e dar um norte para quem está nesta jornada, existem várias formas de calcular quando uma pessoa vai atingir a sua independência financeira. Há muita discursão e controvérsia em relação a estas regras, mas elas funcionam pelo menos como uma referência, um ponto de partida para se determinar metas concretas com números, o que é fundamental:

1) Quando a renda passiva dos seus investimentos gerarem pelo menos 3 vezes o seu custo de vida, você pode se considerar uma pessoa financeiramente livre. Entenda renda passiva como todo o dinheiro que os seus investimentos geram sem você fazer nada: dividendos, aluguel, juros, prêmios e bonificações, etc.

Exemplo: Se o seu custo de vida anual é de 40 mil reais, seus investimentos devem gerar pelo menos 120 mil reais de renda passiva ao longo do ano (ou seja, uma carteira de investimentos de 1 milhão, com retorno anual bem conservador de 12%).

Renda Passiva = Ganhar dinheiro sem fazer nada

 

2) The 4% Rule (A Regra dos 4%) determina o percentual que você pode gastar anualmente do seu patrimônio, mantendo o valor do montante principal no longo prazo.

Exemplo: Se você tem um PL (Patrimônio Líquido) de 1 milhão de reais, poderia gastar 40 mil reais por ano (4% de 1 milhão) para manter o valor principal do seu patrimônio.

 

3) No ponto em que seus investimentos valem 25 vezes suas despesas anuais, sua independência financeira está batendo na sua porta.

Exemplo: Gasta 40 mil por ano? Então 1 milhão de reais em investimentos será o suficiente. (40 mil vezes 25)

 

Uma curiosidade: As 3 formas de calcular dão o mesmo resultado, percebeu?

 

E por que não gastar toda a renda passiva que seus investimentos geram? Por que os investimentos devem gerar 3 vezes o que eu preciso para viver? Simples: por causa da famosa e infame inflação, ou aumento generalizado dos preços.

O efeito da inflação sobre o seus investimentos nunca pode ser desprezado, especialmente num país como o Brasil. A inflação faz com que o dinheiro vá perdendo valor ao longo do tempo e perceber este efeito é fácil: basta lembrar que o que você compra com R$ 100 hoje é muito menos do que comprava a 5 anos atrás. Eu mesmo lembro que costumava comprar 30 ovos na frutaria do meu bairro por R$ 8,00 a uns anos atrás e agora os mesmos 30 ovos custam R$ 17,50 (comprei ontem!)

Já era! A cédula de 1 real foi engolida pela inflação e perdeu o valor…

Se você gastar toda a renda passiva que seus investimentos geram, o valor principal não cresce e vai perdendo valor com o tempo. Por isso você deve gastar uma parte e reinvestir a diferença sempre, para que a renda passiva gerada não seja insuficiente no futuro. Alguns ativos financeiros como ações e imóveis tendem a corrigir naturalmente seu valor principal no longo prazo, mas isso é tema para um outro post. As 3 formas de calcular acima vão te dar uma boa referência para começar a estabelecer seus objetivos com números.

Te pareceu muito difícil atingir a Independência Financeira?  Bom, ninguém falou que seria fácil. E se fosse fácil, todo mundo seria rico. Minha sugestão é simples: reverta as dificuldades e use-as para estimular seu espírito de desafio e alcançar seu objetivo, se realmente é o que você deseja. A Independência Financeira é uma meta de longo prazo, então uma das chaves é ter disciplina para poupar, investir com inteligência e ter paciência para chegar lá.

E lembre-se: cuide bem do seu dinheiro ou alguém vai te cobrar caro para fazer isso pior que você!

    • Bacana, Martin. Este conceito de IF pode ser básico para um cara mais experiente como você, mas para muita gente ainda é algo desconhecido, infelizmente. Eu mesmo não tinha muita ideia do que estava fazendo quando comecei a vários anos atrás. Estas 3 formas de calcular quando a IF será alcançada não é nada definitivo, mas serve como uma referência inicial para se estabelecer uma meta. Depois a pessoa vai ajustando os números, quando tiver mais experiência.

    Para iniciar qualquer plano é necessário um objetivo, um propósito. Inclusive para os investimentos. Vejo muita gente investindo sem objetivo e terminam pela não otimização de suas carteiras.
    É importante ter uma carteira de longo prazo, buscando a IF, por exemplo e outros investimentos para objetivos em um horizonte temporal mais curto, como uma viagem para o ano seguinte.

    • Com certeza, Léo. A busca pela IF é algo que leva tempo, exige paciência e disciplina para poupar e investir inteligentemente todos os meses ao longo dos anos. Sem um propósito claro, a chance de se desviar do caminho é muito, muito grande.

      Pra piorar, estamos o tempo todo sendo induzidos a fazer tudo o que compromete um ganho exponencial com os investimentos: ficar “girando patrimônio”, comprando e vendendo ativos (que muitas vezes são passivos…) e realizando lucros pequenos, ao invés de deixar o dinheiro quieto, se beneficiando da ação dos juros compostos.
